We are well into 2017, and it looks to be a pretty volatile year, as has been mostly the case since Uranus and Pluto went through their square dance (a 90 degree angular relationship) between 2011 and 2016. There were a total of 7 hits on the 90 degree angle before the dance was complete. Now we are in the wake of that energy, and like the last time they connected, a merging of energy in the 1960’s, the repercussions last many, many years after the prime time event. There are plenty of standout connections to write about, but I want to concentrate on retrograde energy since there is a pretty intense overlap occurring with Mercury just entering retrograde on 4/9 while Venus is wrapping up its retrograde journey on 4/15. Jupiter has been retrograde since 2/6 and Saturn just went retrograde on 4/5. What does this mean to people reading the above and feeling like I just switched from English to Klingon?

In astrology we view the solar system from an Earth-centric viewpoint rather than a Sun-centric viewpoint, so, from time to time, planets will appear to “go backwards” in the sky. This apparent backward motion is called retrograde motion and its the same thing that occurs when you are watching a car you are passing on the highway. The car is not going backwards, but it appears to be because you are passing at a faster speed. When planets “go retrograde”, and they all do for certain amounts of time, we are supposed to slow down and reflect on the energy of that planet. Think of all motion as the speed limit; when direct, the speed limit is at its maximum, and when retrograde it is like traveling through a speed zone, like the city limits or a school zone. You are supposed to slow down and when you do not, that’s when bad things happen. You may have heard you should not travel during a Mercury retrograde or sign contracts or some other nonsense that just does not prove to be really detrimental in terms of traveling or contract signing. However, what’s good to know about doing these activities and other actions under retrograde periods is how useful wise adjustments can be to getting the best results as opposed to lackluster, frustrating, or yes, potentially unpleasant ones.

Think of retrograde as the period of “re-” (review, readjustment, realignment, rest, reconsideration, recede, reacquaint, resist, realize, and on and on). With Mercury retrograde from 4/9-4/20 (Taurus) to 4/21-5/3 (Aries), its a good time to review your finances between 4/9 and 4/20 and then review the actions you need to be taking to make sure you are on the right road to security when Mercury gets back to Taurus on 5/16. I, myself, am meeting with a financial adviser on 4/20. With Venus in retrograde and most of the time Aries (3/4-4/3), it’s certainly a time to look at what one needs to be self-focused on in relationships, while the Pisces period (4/3-4/15) will help us explore the spiritual connections of our relationships so we can figure out what new way we want to go after in relationship when Venus returns to Aries on 4/28. Jupiter, our planet for expansion, will do its entire retrograde phase in Libra (between 2/6 and 6/9), thus doing all the “re-” work also in relationships. It can be a good time to refine your Rolodex (for those of you over 40, like me) or your phone contacts. Relationship rebalancing is the work for Jupiter retrograde in Libra; on a larger scale watch for Walmart like “rollbacks” on laws of the land. Saturn, which rules structure and rules in our lives, will do its entire retrograde phase in Sagittarius (between 4/5 and 8/25) and cause us to need to restructure and review our beliefs. Expect a fair amount of disillusion to sweep across the world as the reality of change begins to clarify after the various dust ups that were most profound in the United Kingdom “Brexit” and the US presidential election. Here’s a sample story regarding a woman who voted for Trump and thought only “bad hombres” would be deported and not her illegal, but productive husband of 20+ years in the US (http://metro.co.uk/2017/04/06/trump-voter-shocked-after-husband-is-deported-in-immigration-crackdown-6557228/).

Additionally, this will not be the only time that 4 planets will be retrograde together, and there will be a time when 5 will be retrograde (starting on 8/3 – Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron – and ending on 8/26 when Saturn goes direct). This will be a “retrograde heavy” year and not the time to rush headlong while ignoring the change in the speed limit. Of course, the most useful way to engage this energy is to know where it’s in play in your actual chart. For myself, these various retrograde energies will play out in my 1st House of Identity (all of Jupiter retrograde), my 2nd House of Resources (all of Saturn retrograde), my 3rd House of Communication and Friendships (all of Pluto retrograde), my 5th House of Creativity (part of Venus retrograde, as well as all of Chiron and Neptune retrograde), my 6th House of Day-to-Day Work and Skills (part of Venus, part of Mercury, and all of Uranus), my 7th House of Partnerships (part of Mercury). It’s also important to know that many of my natal points are going to get severely tuned up with the usual 3 passes that retrograde phases bring (direct, then retrograde, then direct again), including my most significant, my Sun and Moon. It’s going to be a personally transformative year for me, of epic proportions.

There are usually six main areas people come to me for evaluation and guidance: career, health, life purpose, event planning (a wedding or starting a business or selling a home), location/relocation, and relationships. Relationships are by far the most common reasons for a session, with career a close second. Life purpose is something I look at regardless of the focus of the session because it informs all situations. Event planning is not something people use enough of, but those that do are often amazed at the positive results (most recently I have guided people to put homes on the market at certain times and they have sold in less than month, and at the asking price or better, in fact). One of the most “testable” forms of astrological practice is astrocartography, or what is best described as location astrology, to determine the best place for certain goals or to live, or to understand the energy of a place you are currently living. There is a branch of astrology that deals with health, often referred to as medical astrology, which I know the basics and key indicators to look for, but do not specialize in (I have worked with several clients to plan key procedures when they have flexibility to schedule the procedure or to understand the energy of getting something medical done that is locked on a certain date.). In my previous blog entry I wrote about the parent/child relationship. For this blog I want to write about the practical application of astrology to romantic relationships.

Doing relationship astrology is so far beyond Sun sign comparison that it is like the difference between a unicycle and a space ship. If you have dabbled in astrology and relationship, then surely you have heard that your sign is not good with some other sign. Taurus should avoid … and Aries should avoid … which is like saying that someone from Canada should avoid any relationship with anyone from Japan. It’s not completely useless, certainly it is easier for people from one culture to start out with people from a culture if they speak the same language or have the same social/political structures. But starting out is not the same thing as succeeding and maintaining, and quite often difference is a form of strong attraction for many because signs that do not readily align or collaborate create the energy for GROWTH! As it turns out, the Sun sign is a fine ENTRY POINT to relationship, just not romantic ones. It’s great for employee/employer, but not at the top for romance. My entry point is the signs of the Moon, followed by a look at Mercury (how you communicate), then the Nodes (your karma and dharma for this life time), then the Ascendant/Descendant axis (what you bring to relationships/what you seed from relationships), then the Sun, then the 8th House (which deals with intimacy and shared resources), then Venus (how you relate) and Mars (what you want), Juno (how you commit), Vesta (what you want your home to be), and Chiron (your wound and where you need to heal). All points actually play a factor, to greater or lesser degrees, depending on their strength in your chart and interaction with the other person’s chart.

A relationship reading begins with a deep look into each individual chart followed by a comparison of the two charts, one “on top” of the other. The next chart to consider is a combined (or composite) chart which looks at the relationship as a single merged chart. Then I look at that chart in relationship to the individual charts. In other words, how does the entity that is the couple impact each individual in the relationship. Often the couple will favor each individual in different ways; sometimes it can show some very one-sided energy for one person and a lot of struggling energy for the other. Lastly it is important to look at timing charts (progressions and transits) to see what is going on at the current time and in the future for the individuals and the couple. As is true with any astrological work, it is not a static, one time experience, but an ongoing evolution of energy that is worth revisiting regularly, once a year, at the minimum, every few months if possible, and monthly if you want to really stay in a state of fine tuning (that can work for certain individuals, but can get overwhelming for most). I recommend a once a year check in, with sessions on an as needed basis when life circumstances take sudden turns or internals shifts occur that will profoundly affect the relationship trajectory.

Let’s consider a couple of actual applications. One client I worked with was looking for help regarding how, when, and where to propose. Astrology is a study of timing and meaning; synchronize both and great success ensues. You can help yourself immensely by leveraging this tool to work towards great meaning and ideal timing in a conscious way. A good look at his partner’s chart revealed a strong appreciation for public display of affection, a desire to be “on stage” and in a beautiful setting when experiencing affection (8th House ruled by Leo) from the partner with displays of power (Venus in Scorpio, Pluto in the 8th House and in Leo). I recommended a expensive restaurant with a table in middle of the room and to keep it very secret until popping the question. He followed this guidance and they both shared a memorable and positive moment ideally conceived and executed. We did further work arranging the marriage date, which also produced another truly great experience for both of them. Another example, less profound, but no less important involved a client wanting to know what kind of first date would be good. What was key here is that the person requesting the information derives enjoyment from the other person’s enjoyment, so the activity did not have to be something he would enjoy because his design was open to anything so long as the other person would enjoy it. And in this case the other person did show a very clear energy directed at risk taking as a way to relate, so the suggestions involved anything from white water rafting to skydiving; the date needed to be an adventure. Zip lining was actually selected and it was a great date.

One thing to understand about any reading is that the experience is meant to be a dialogue between me and the clients. I need to know if it is a new relationship or a long term one. What is the nature of each person’s development? Mature individuals can leverage the growth potential in energetic challenges in their chart connections with others, where those exist, while also maximizing the flow of energy to get the benefits of where ease is part of the energy interaction. Immature individuals cannot succeed even with the most flowing of chart energies; the chart is not a replacement for the work of a successful relationship or the source of failure for a relationship that does not work out; people are responsible, not the chart. The chart helps us understand how we can best embrace our choices responsibly and how we will likely try to place blame when things do not go our way. The chart can help us understand and share our strengths and weaknesses with our partners. In my chart I can readily initiate and galvanize, but I have to put double or triple the energy into getting fine details exact. My wife has the strength of attention to detail. I can paint the middle of the walls, but she needs to be the one to paint the edges. If you notice, in your relationship, that you both like to paint the middle or the edges, then I would advise hiring someone to do the part neither of you enjoy! Asking the other to do it can easily and consistently be a source of frustration that, over time, can lead to resentment, which can cripple or kill a relationship.

Astrology can help identify your core patterns, ways of expression, filters of interpretation and then, with professional guidance or very serious study, you can look into a partner’s chart see the core energies there and understand how you merge, collaborate, conflict, and miss with each other.

There is a book on Amazon entitled Kids Don’t Come with a Manual: The Essential Guide to a Happy Family Life, which currently has a 5 star rating at the time of this post (by 13 contributors). What if I told you they do come with a manual? In fact, we all come with a manual; its our astrology chart, which is a schematic of the solar system showing the main bodies in the form of an approximated diagram using glyphs for said bodies, and specially calculated points, that convey information about our essential spiritual design in this incarnation based on the day, time, and location of our births. That would be a manual you would want to read, right?! And not only your own manual, but if you had access to and the ability to understand the other manuals, you would want to do more than just take a peak, especially if such knowledge could help you improve your relationships and understanding of others. Finding out about your astrology chart is well worth the effort. And its just as useful for learning about your children, if you have them.

I became a parent on January 30, 2005 at 9:53 pm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. That was the day my daughter was born. At the time I had a solid, serious amateur understanding of astrology, enough to know that my partner, who was a Scorpio with Capricorn Rising and a Gemini Moon, and I, who am an Aries with Scorpio Rising and a Libra Moon would do best to have a child born somewhere in the range between Scorpio and Aquarius. We consciously made the decision to try to have a child so that our starting efforts would result in child arriving within one of those Sun Signs. First try off birth control and we conceived in May of 2004. Since that time I moved from serious amateur to serious professional astrologer and started a full time spiritual advising practice in July of 2013 with astrology as one of the two pillars of my work; tarot and oracle card reading was the other pillar. Through a combination of many factors: keen observation, professional pedagogical training (PhD in English), and astrology I have been able to read the manual of my daughter to create and maintain a happy life for my daughter and our very unusual, but pretty damn awesome family.

Aquarius is her Sun Sign and the sign that is the most unconventional and unpredictable in its expression. On the one hand it can produce the “circus performer” or on the other hand the “hallmark man or woman”. Those with this as their Life Path sign will be odd for being different or be odd for being the ideal version of the norm. They are oddly odd or oddly normal. An astrology chart is a schematic, that when read properly, is a manual, of sorts. It offers guidance, but not deterministic outcomes. Through a combination of chart interpretation and observation, I have been able to see the unique personality of my daughter faster and more clearly than if I were relying on observation alone. Her astrology helped guide her mother and I to select a Montessori school for her education, and one that would easily be described as Aquarian when compared with the other private and public schools in the area. She has been there since she was 18 months old and is the odd child who has actually been at the school the longest and could be the first child to go all the way through to high school (they graduated their first senior high school student last year). It would definitely be the unusual story to say she went to the same school from 18 months to 18 years old. Whether that happens or not, the possibility of something so “different” is very Aquarian.

Without delving into “astrospeak”, I can tell you her chart indicates a tremendous creative energy, which reached a new level of expression with her latest school project, a report on Amelia Earhart. Around the age of 9 she really connected with television, and not in the plug in and disconnect way, but in the “I want to understand how it works” way. She is part of the generation that is growing up watching youtube more than traditional commercial tv, and she wanted to create her own videos. So, I purchased her a Flip camera, one of the best, simple video cameras ever made and found a basic editing program for the desktop computer she was learning to use. Within a few months she had mastered the basic program and wanted something more sophisticated … and by mastered, I mean she learned how to create intros, add music, cut scenes, and do transitions all on her own! By 10 she was asking for a youtube channel to post her creations on, which I set up for her and which I monitor. The culmination of her video work reached a crescendo with this school project.

The project was your usual research the explorer, take some notes, and then stand in front of the class and present. This approach rubbed her fur in absolutely the wrong direction for many reasons. First it lacked creativity, which is a core part of her spiritual design. Also her chart shows, and her behavior reflects, a natural shyness for the spotlight even though it will find a way to shine on her even if she does not make a conscious effort to attract it. Knowing this she asked me if she could do a video for her project and wanted to know if I could be the proxy to ask her teacher for permission to do so. In some situations I or her mother will press her to challenge herself to speak up, but in others I will help, which is part of the design between our two schemes. The teacher agreed that she could the video project. She and I did some research and I helped create a script of seven small paragraphs that she could read off camera while showing pictures of Amelia Earhart in a video. This approach still left her mostly disengaged.

It was not until I suggested that she use her My Little Pony figurines to tell the story that the switch flipped and she dove deep into the creative work. You see, she is a My Little Pony super fan and most of her 30 plus videos are stories she creates and acts out, with unique voices for each pony, using the ponies from her collection. It turned out that this was the approach she wanted to take all along, and boy did she run with. She went from “how little do I have to do to get it done” to working on a video for 3 to 5 hours to get a polished product, that even included bloopers at the end. Here’s a link to the video. The project was a smash with her teachers and her peers. And its got great information in it delivered in a way that will help her and anyone who sees it learn about and remember Amelia Earhart.

I share this story to really share my appreciation for how astrology has helped me parent successfully, by knowing how to enhance her strengths and avoid unnecessary suffering by attempting to put misaligned expectations on a path to ruin. And this is not simply an Aquarian story; there are 28 other points I study in the chart to get the nuances of my clients, my friends, my family, and my daughter. I know she is touched by grace because of the placement of her Moon and Ascendant; I know she has tremendous energy reserves because of the relationship between her Mars and Pluto; I know the tremendous power of her imagination because of the placement of Mercury and Neptune in Aquarius with her Sun, and on and on. I also can see and foresee certain shifts in her energy and life based on the movement of points through different areas of her chart at this time, one of the most powerful being Pluto moving through the 4th House of Family, which entered in 2008. Between then and now she has witnessed her mother and father separate from a romantic relationship yet still remain together (she and her husband, who I married lived upstairs while I lived downstairs from 2012 until this year; they recently moved to Atlanta but still share our home here on a regular basis). I recently married, and my wife is from South Africa and is arriving in 6 days with her 14 year old daughter. So my daughter who started out as an only child with two parents now has two stepsisters (1 from her stepfather and 1 from her stepmother) and two stepbrothers (from her stepmother). She has 4 parents and 8 grandparents. And this is her norm.

I do many types of readings, but some of my favorites are parent/child. I have seen some truly amazing results, not only for parents of young children but with adult children and their parents. I have clients now that have had me read the chart of their newborn and now they are several years old and see how helpful it has been to know the chart and see the individual the child already is, upon arrival, in many, many ways. We all come with a manual and its really helpful to crack it open and use it!
